CTI – Basildene Manor Transformed by CTI Apprentices

During the week of the 6th June 2023, CTI apprentices from Western Australian and South Australia helped transform Basildene Manor in Margeret River WA.  Part of the Grand Mecure, the property features 19 rooms and suites close to wineries, restaurants, cafes, and recreational activities.

Given the the building was a National Trust it was a great opportunity for Chillingworth Training Institute (CTI) apprentices to be able to learn from CTI’s four Industry Trainers on how to install Brittons Axminster patterned carpet to the rooms, common areas and the stairs.  It is very rare that apprentices get the opportunity to learn their trade on such a complex project and were guided through the planning, floor preparation and installation methodology in such an iconic building.

In 1998, Basildene Manor was classified by The National Trust of Australia as a significant heritage property.  Basildene was built in 1912, by English migrant Percy Willmott and his wife Margaret (Brockman) for his family. Two sons (Henry and Edward), and a daughter (Madge) were raised at Basildene, and their descendants remained at Basildene until the late 1970’s. Granite rocks were quarried on the property and the finest selected to build the magnificent walls, while inside superbly finished local jarrah was used to fashion the staircases, balustrades, the floors and the majestic central gallery and main hall.

Today, Basildene still stands proud and guests from all over the world are drawn to its charms and a sense of history from a bygone era.

The idea of utilising such a complex project to teach the CTI apprentices came form Kym Nisbet who was the former owner of the Bussleton and Margret River Choices Flooring stores and now CTI Industry Trainer for SA/WA.  Kym pitched the idea of this project for his cohort to the CTI Group as a great opportunity to help fast track the learning and skillset of the apprentices under his tutorledge.

The end result looks amazing and the CTI would like to congratulate the apprentices, their highly skilled trainers and the Choices Flooring member stores, who have taken onboard the next generation of skilled craftspeople.

CTI would also like to acknowledge the Alliance Partners who supported this project, the Accor Group and Basildene Manor for allowing CTI to complete this amazing project.  A special thank you to Choices Flooring Margret River, Bussleton and Bunbury store owners Dan and Realene Knox for giving CTI the opportunity to use this project to enhance the skill set of our young SA and WA craftspeople.
